As my term as the Military Representative of the Hellenic Armed Forces in NATO comes to an end today, allow me to share with you, in a few words, my final thoughts on the experiences and knowledge I’ve gained during these last 16 months.
Allow me to begin by thanking my team and associates for the excellent work and continuous support they have provided me. My deputy Captain S. Dimopoulos H.N. and my entire staff for their honest and unselfish commitment to our mission. Our success is the result of their efforts. I would also like to express my appreciation to Ambassadors Lambridis and Sekeris for their guidance and assistance and to all the personnel of the permanent delegation of Greece for their cooperation and support.
Dear colleagues, it has been one of the highlights of my career to serve with this esteemed group of officers and share goals, ideas, relations and friendships with you. A group unique in its synthesis, distinguished among any other by the exclusive bonds that unite its members. A group unique, due to the common values, same honor and similar pride for our countries and service. Distinctive, in the ideas that shaped our character during our academy years, have flourished for more than 40 years, and we all share. As character defines destiny, our character, ladies and gentlemen, represents the strength of our committee, a strength we should preserve as the jewel of the crown.
Considering the long standing English – French language dilemma I have always wished to address this committee in Greek, but realized that it would have been indeed “Greek” to most, if not all, present in this room. I realized, however, that I could make my address mostly using the Greek language, which would still be English and French, to everybody. So in the spirit of compromise, and with your permission, Mr. Chairman, in my closing address to you, and in an effort to design my personal perspective on the honor, the values and the goals our great alliance represents, I have decided, as a prominent Greek did many years ago, to continue in English, using, with the exception of articles and prepositions, only Greek words, confident that you will all understand.
It was Thucydides who first analyzed the critical problems of the ecumenical antagonism of ethnicities, ideologies, political systems and authorities, and the plethora and frenetic rhythm of technological metamorphosis, which still generate problems and agony, but also symbolize new horizons. This phenomenon is characterizing every epoch but, to my thesis, we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices against all scepticism, and be the protagonists.
We in NATO we epitomize the authentic paradigm. I eulogize the prophetic basis of the 1949 institution of this organization, our strategies, policies, methods and dynamic character. Our unhypocritical ideological synergy based on common axioms, always in a democratic climate, which constitutes our own aegis, the hymn to our nike. I encourage our ability to harmonize idealism and pragmatism, as our policies continue to be based more on strategical and less on political criteria and as long as the metron between practical, philanthropic, economic and ecological scopes constitutes our emphatic gnomon. The epilogue, as my atomic idea and paradigm, and only prosthesis to this emblematic scheme, can only be the aphorism of the catastrophic orthodox political analysis from our methodology, the anathema and nemesis in our logic.
We dialogue with enthusiasm in our synods, and synagonize with autonomy, analyzing, synthesizing and harmonizing dogmas, theories and polymorphous political ideas. This is the symbol of our triumph. We are all, Belgians, British, Bulgarians, Dutch, Germans, French, Hungarians, Italians, Latvians, Polish, Scandinavians, Slovenians and Slovaks, Turks, Europeans and North Americans, all together, no ethnicity by itself, the architects, the generators and the progeny of the western ethos and its ecologic and anthropocentric politism, all in authority to further institute it. And this constitutes our organization’s phenomenal charisma.
Mr Chairman, dear colleagues. I would like to apologize for my eccentric monologue and emphasize my plea to you my friends to accept these words as a sign of unity and companionship. To have received the price of your friendship was an honour to me. Like each one of you I arrived to NATO believing in the promise of my nation. Because of you I leave now convinced of the even greater promise of our alliance, and I thank you all for this.
